Are DIY Mosquito Control Solutions Worth It?
Enjoying your backyard can be a nightmare during the summer months when mosquito populations are active. It can be a challenge to find a solution that is effective and cost-conscious. There are dozens of DIY mosquito control solutions out there for you to try, but do any of them stack up to a professional mosquito control service?
Let’s explore a few DIY mosquito control methods and repellents and compare them to a professional mosquito solution to see if they are worth the effort.
Bottle Trap
What you will need:
- An empty 2-liter plastic soda bottle
- Two tablespoons of brown sugar
- One tablespoon of yeast or honey
- Masking tape
- Scissors
- 500ml of water
How to create the trap:
- Puncture a hole in the plastic bottle with the scissors and cut off the top of the bottle.
- Invert the bottle’s top and place it inside the bottle, acting as a funnel.
- Fill the bottle with water up until it is almost full.
- Remove the bottle’s top half and pour the brown sugar and yeast into the bottle and mix to dissolve.
- Place the lid back on and tape the lid to secure it to the bottle and place in a location where mosquitoes are active.
This DIY mosquito control method attracts the mosquitoes to the smell of the yeast and brown sugar but does not let them escape. Once they fly into the bottle, they are likely to touch the water and drown or continue buzzing around the sides until they fall into the water. The funnel-shaped design is confusing enough to prevent mosquitoes from escaping.
The problem with this trap is that it only targets living mosquitoes and attracts more to your yard by luring them in with the scent. This trap does nothing to guard against new mosquito populations and only affects the current population on a very small scale.
Sticky Traps
What you will need:
- Masking Tape
- String
Cut strips of masking tape and lay them out flat, overlapping each other to make one large sheet of tape. Then, place this sheet in an area of activity so mosquitoes will land on it and get stuck.
This method is cheap and does not take much effort to create, but it is not effective. For one, masking tape generally varies in its level of adhesiveness, meaning mosquitoes might be able to pull themselves off the trap. Also, since there is nothing attracting mosquitoes to the trap, many mosquitoes will avoid the trap entirely. Overall, this DIY mosquito control solution will not yield noticeable results.
Plants That Repel Mosquitoes
Basil, Catnip, Citronella, Lemon Balm, and Marigolds are all plants that have mosquito-repellent properties. Lavender, Black-Eyed Susan, Swamp Milkweed, and Joe-Pye Weed can attract mosquito predators like birds and dragonflies to your property.
Simply including strongly scented plants in your garden isn’t enough to keep mosquitoes away. These plants only provide a moderate layer of short-term mosquito protection, and don’t kill active or potential mosquito populations. Using this DIY mosquito control method means determined mosquitoes can still find their way to you during your outdoor festivities.
